There are many of us who dream about creating our own space so that we can work without all the interruptions and tedious travelling associated with going to the office. These thoughts are greatest when stuck in a traffic jam miles from home.

There are many manufacturers, suppliers and installers of garden buildings with products ranging from small flimsy structures for garden storage through to impressive weatherproof structures, designed and built for all year round use.

There are some key points to consider before taking any new project too far. Firstly, it is absolutely essential to check on the local rules and regulations covering the proposed location for a structure. These regulations can vary from county to county and will be a lot stricter in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, National Parks or Heritage Sites. Making contact with the relevant authority will clarify what is permissible and what is not.

If that appears too daunting there is help at hand. One company that can provide the complete service from start to finish is based in East Devon. From tranquil summerhouses, hobby studios, practical sheds and workshops to a professional home office, Lyme Bay Cabins can deliver the goods. The company is owned and run by Gary Davies and he has a very clear business message “Every project and customer is different; we go the extra mile to offer the best products and service to help turn ideas into reality to achieve the dream.” His company supplies cabin kits throughout the UK with a full installation service in the south west region.

Bespoke or Standard

The impressive ranges of cabins shown on their website are all made from Scandinavian softwood which is Forrest Stewardship Council [FSC] certified. Any model from the standard range can be adapted to become a bespoke order to satisfy a customer’s specific requirements. Variations have included repositioning doors or windows, adding internal partitions to create separate rooms or storage space plus the addition of internal fittings and services to ensure that the building can be used all year round.

When a new timber cabin is to be used as an all year round office or work place, it is essential to build to the highest specification affordable. Careful consideration must be given to the maximum thickness of timber in the walls, floors and roof, plus the maximum possible insulation throughout.
Don’t forget to include the electric and water supplies when building the base foundations, plus all the fixture and fittings that will make the new building an efficient and enjoyable space to work in.

Lyme Bay Cabins can carry out a site survey and produce a CAD working sketch to indicate how a proposed structure will look when built, and then a full costing can be given for the required package based on full installation or a customer DIY project build. As their website states, ‘We don’t just install cabins. We install confidence.’
